When a repair is worth it

The arithmetic of repairing

A repair makes sense when its cost sits below roughly a third of replacement, the unit has years of service left, and the fault is not a symptom of general fatigue. All three matter. An inexpensive repair on a twelve-year-old console with failing faders throughout buys a few months and the same conversation again in spring. We would rather explain that at diagnosis than after the invoice.

What arrives here was usually preventable

The failures we see most often are not dramatic. Dust in fans leading to overheating, connectors worn by repeated forcing, batteries left flat for a season, cables damaged where they enter a plug. An annual visit catches almost all of it in an afternoon. The equipment that comes to us in an emergency, the week before an event, is generally the equipment nobody looked at for three years.
